The Baba Yaga Tradition In Russian Folk Art

Storytelling and Hands-on Workshop

Baba Yaga, the wicked witch of the forest, appears in many traditional Russian legends and fairy tales. She surrounds herself with magic and spells, and children who encounter her must use all of their cleverness and resources to escape her entrapment. This unique cultural program, designed for children 5 and older, combines dramatic storytelling, traditional Russian music, and the painting of authentic Baba Yaga images on wood. Children will learn the story of Baba Yaga and why the she is such an important figure in Russian folklore. Everyone will leave the workshop with an authentic hand-made piece of Russian folk art on wood. (There is a materials fee for anyone participating in the hands-on component of the program. This fee covers the cost of the wooden Baba Yaga and the use of paints for painting on wood and brushes for the workshop.)
